Registration open for London BWC Final

It’s that time of the year again. Brompton has announced that the Prudential RideLondon cycling festival will once again be hosting the Brompton World Championship Final in central London.

Grab a magic marker and circle Saturday 28 July on your calendar. A good thing to keep in mind before you start making travel arrangements however is that you need to be drafted in order to race. Ballot registration for the scarce 550 racing slots is now open through the organizers website and will closed on Monday 5 February (or earlier if 1.500 registrants are reached).

There’s 8 laps around St James’ Park, past Buckingham Palace and down The Mall to be done, but don’t be fooled, only the really fast cats get to ride all 8 laps. Not sure if you’re a top racer? Then make your second to last lap you fastest. Thank me later.

Now with only one sharp turn on Horse Guard Road where the pace drops, this is a pretty fast course. Don’t blow your engine in the first 10 minutes. Also, mid-race might not be the perfect moment to ogle at Buckingham Palace if that was your plan.

So if you are among the happy few, looking your best in a truly dapper outfit – no lycra, you know the drill – than I’ve got three random tips that might win you a couple of places in this iconic race.

– Everything starts with a mad Le Mans-style dash to your bikes. You might want to work on that 10 meter sprint.

– As important as your racing capabilities are your unfolding skills. Practice makes perfect,… so practice!

– Since you’re not the only one racing, try to get used to riding in a ‘peloton’.

Good luck securing that racing spot everybody and always remember that you are riding a Brompton folding bike wearing business attire… don’t take it all to serious, it’s just fun and games.
